Supporting Natural Foot Mechanics in Phoenix, AZ

Not Anti-Barefoot. Not Anti-Support. Just Honest About What Your Feet Actually Need.

There's a real and growing movement toward barefoot and minimalist footwear, and we're genuinely on board with the underlying goal: strong, mobile, naturally functioning feet that don't rely on a shoe to do all the work. The research backs this up — transitioning toward more minimal footwear can improve foot strength and encourage more natural movement mechanics.

But the same research is honest about something else: rushing that transition comes with real risk. Studies have found that runners who move too quickly into minimalist or barefoot shoes see increased bone stress injuries — the bones and soft tissue of the foot need time to adapt to a very different demand than a supportive shoe provides. And a broader look at the evidence found no clear proof that barefoot movement actually lowers your overall injury risk — it just tends to shift where those injuries show up, often from the knee and hip toward the foot, ankle, and calf.

So we're not here to tell you barefoot is wrong. We're here to help you get there safely, and to offer real support if you're not there yet — or if your feet need help regardless of which shoes you wear.

Where Foot Support Fits Into This

Not everyone is a candidate for a rapid transition to minimal footwear, and not everyone wants to be. If you're dealing with foot, knee, hip, or lower back discomfort tied to how your feet function day to day, added support can be part of the solution — either as your ongoing approach, or as a bridge while your feet build the strength for less support over time.

We're certified to fit patients with Sole Supports custom orthotics, built using their MASS Posture™ process — your foot is cast in its ideal, corrected position using a foam casting box, capturing full-contact support across all three arches of your foot rather than a flat scan or a generic shape. Each pair is calibrated to your specific weight, activity level, and flexibility, and built to hold up for years, not just a season.

Sole Supports also offers tiered options depending on your needs and budget:

  • A more affordable, adjustable option using interchangeable inserts, for people who want genuine custom support without the cost of the flagship device.
  • The flagship, fully custom Sole Support orthotic, for more significant or persistent issues, or for anyone who wants the most complete level of correction available.

We also continue to offer Foot Levelers, another fully custom option built from a cast of your feet, designed to support all three arches for whole-body alignment. We carry both brands because different feet, activity levels, and budgets genuinely call for different solutions — there isn't one right answer for everyone.

We'll help you figure out which option makes sense for your feet, your budget, and your goals — including whether working toward less support over time is realistic for you.

What to Expect at Your Fitting

Getting fitted starts with a real assessment, not a quick foot trace. Dr. Carla evaluates your posture, gait, and how your feet actually function while standing, walking, and moving — not just their shape at rest. From there, we take the casting needed for whichever option fits you best, and once your custom pair arrives, we check the fit in person to make sure they're doing their job, not just sitting in your shoe.

Both Sole Supports and Foot Levelers fall in the range you'd expect for genuinely custom, hand-built orthotics — meaningfully more than a drugstore insert or mall kiosk scan. We'll walk you through the specifics and what's included before you commit to either option.

When This Matters Most: Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common reasons people end up needing foot support isn't a barefoot-versus-shoes debate at all — it's plantar fasciitis, a common and often stubborn source of heel and arch pain. Supportive orthotics are one piece of managing plantar fasciitis, particularly during a flare or while the tissue is healing. For cases that haven't responded to support and rest alone, we also offer shockwave therapy, which has strong research behind it specifically for plantar fasciitis that hasn't resolved with conservative care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to choose between barefoot shoes and orthotics? No — for many people, it's not either/or. Building foot strength through gradual, appropriate barefoot exposure and using support where you need it aren't contradictory goals.

Will orthotics make my feet weaker over time? This is a fair concern, and it's part of why we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach. The right amount of support depends on your specific feet, your goals, and whether you're working toward less reliance on support over time.

What if I've already tried orthotics and they didn't help? That's often when it's worth looking at what else might be contributing — including whether plantar fasciitis or another specific condition is driving the pain, and whether a treatment like shockwave therapy is a better fit than support alone.
