Prenatal & Postpartum Care + Webster Technique

Supporting Your Body Before, During, and After Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding things a body goes through. In nine months your center of gravity shifts, your ligaments relax under the influence of relaxin, your pelvis widens, your posture adapts, and your nervous system manages all of it while simultaneously regulating your stress response, your sleep, and the environment your baby is developing in.

Most of the discomfort that comes with pregnancy — the low back pain, the hip tension, the sciatica, the disrupted sleep — isn't inevitable. It's your body asking for support it isn't getting.

Gentle, trimester-specific chiropractic care and massage therapy at Breathe help your body manage the demands of pregnancy with significantly more comfort and ease than most people realize is possible. And when the birth is over, the work of postpartum recovery deserves the same level of intentional support.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Prenatal chiropractic care at Breathe is gentle, specific, and calibrated to where you are in your pregnancy. We use positioning and techniques appropriate for every trimester — nothing that puts pressure on the abdomen, and everything adapted to your comfort and your changing body.

Chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy serve two primary functions. The first is structural — maintaining pelvic alignment, reducing sacroiliac joint restriction, and relieving the muscle and ligament strain that builds as your body adapts to carrying and growing a baby. The second is neurological — keeping the nervous system better regulated during a time when it's already working overtime.

Many of our prenatal patients find that regular chiropractic care makes a significant difference in their overall comfort and mobility as their pregnancy progresses. Several tell us it's what allowed them to keep working, sleeping, and moving through their third trimester in a way they weren't sure would be possible.

The Webster Technique

Pelvic balancing for everyone

Dr. Carla is experienced in the Webster Technique — a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed to address sacral misalignment and balance the muscles and ligaments of the pelvis.

Webster is appropriate for anyone with a pelvis (men too!) and at any stage of pregnancy, and is particularly valued by expecting parents seeking to support optimal pelvic alignment and comfort throughout their pregnancy. It addresses the structural and neurological function of the sacrum and the surrounding soft tissue — and is one of the most requested techniques we offer for prenatal patients.

Important note: Webster Technique supports pelvic balance and comfort during pregnancy. Chiropractors do not deliver babies. Only OBs and midwives manage labor and delivery.

Is Prenatal Chiropractic Safe?

The Nervous System Angle — Why This Matters Beyond Comfort

Yes. Prenatal chiropractic care is safe throughout all three trimesters when performed by a chiropractor experienced in pregnancy care. We use modified positioning and low-force techniques appropriate for each stage — nothing forceful, nothing that creates pressure on the abdomen, and everything adapted as your pregnancy progresses.

We do ask that you inform us of any pregnancy complications, placenta positioning concerns, or high-risk designations from your OB before beginning care. In those cases, we coordinate with your obstetric provider to ensure our care is appropriate for your specific situation.

Pregnancy is a significant nervous system event. The hormonal shifts, the physical demands, the sleep disruption, and the anticipatory stress of becoming a parent — all of it loads the nervous system in ways that go beyond the structural complaints most people associate with pregnancy care.

A nervous system running in chronic stress mode during pregnancy affects more than how you feel day to day. It affects sleep quality, recovery between the physical demands of each day, and the physiological environment your baby is developing in. Supporting nervous system regulation during pregnancy isn't just about comfort — it's about giving your body the internal resources it needs to do the most demanding thing it's ever done.

This is why care at Breathe during pregnancy goes beyond structural adjustment. We're supporting the whole system — and that matters.

Prenatal Massage at Breathe

Specifically adapted for the changing needs of a pregnant body at every stage.

Our licensed massage therapists are trained in pregnancy massage and work with both side-lying positioning and a specialized pregnancy cushion that allows you to lie face-down safely and comfortably — something most pregnant patients haven't experienced since their first trimester and immediately love. Having both options means we can adapt your positioning session by session based on what your body needs and what feels best at your current stage of pregnancy.

Our therapists focus prenatal sessions on releasing the specific tension patterns that pregnancy creates — the upper trapezius strain from postural changes, the hip flexor tightness from a shifting center of gravity, the low back holding that builds as the baby grows — while supporting the nervous system downregulation that helps both you and your baby rest more easily.

Prenatal massage is appropriate throughout all three trimesters when performed by a therapist trained in pregnancy massage. Our team brings both the technical skill and the clinical understanding to make this an experience that's deeply restorative rather than simply relaxing.

Many of our patients combine chiropractic and prenatal massage as part of their ongoing pregnancy care — the two modalities work on the same holding patterns through different access points and compound each other's results.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start prenatal chiropractic care?
As soon as you'd like. Many patients begin in the first trimester — particularly if they have existing low back or pelvic issues — and continue throughout their pregnancy. Others come in specifically for third-trimester discomfort. There's no wrong time to start, and earlier care typically means more comfortable progression through the later stages of pregnancy.

Do I need a referral from my OB?
No referral is required. We do recommend letting your OB know you're receiving chiropractic care, and we'll always ask about any pregnancy complications or high-risk factors before beginning. If your OB has specific concerns we'll work with them directly.

Can chiropractic care help with round ligament pain?
Yes — round ligament pain responds well to soft tissue work addressing the ligament itself and to pelvic alignment care that reduces the strain on it. Prenatal massage work specifically addresses round ligament tension, and chiropractic care that maintains pelvic balance reduces the asymmetrical loading that causes it to flare.

How soon after delivery can I come in for postpartum care?
For vaginal deliveries, gentle chiropractic care is typically appropriate within 2-4 weeks. For cesarean deliveries, we recommend waiting until your OB clears you for physical activity, which is usually 6-8 weeks. Postpartum massage can often begin sooner — ask directly about timing for your situation.

I'm breastfeeding. Is care safe?
Yes. Neither chiropractic care nor massage involves anything that affects breastfeeding. Many of our postpartum patients specifically find that care helps with the neck, shoulder, and upper back tension that nursing positions create — which makes the breastfeeding experience itself more comfortable.

Do you work with patients who've had a cesarean?
Yes. Cesarean recovery has its own specific set of structural and nervous system demands — including scar tissue considerations, core re-engagement, and the postural patterns that develop during recovery. We adapt our approach accordingly and coordinate with your OB on timing and any restrictions.

Postpartum Recovery

The postpartum period is one of the most physically demanding transitions a body goes through — and one of the most underserved by conventional healthcare. Your body has just done something extraordinary. It deserves support that matches the scale of what it accomplished.

What the postpartum body is managing:

  • Pelvic floor and sacroiliac joint recovery from the physical demands of labor and delivery
  • Postural strain from feeding, carrying, and the new physical demands of caring for a newborn
  • Neck and upper back tension from nursing and bottle-feeding positions
  • Hormonal shifts that affect ligament laxity, mood, and nervous system stability
  • The emotional and neurological load of sleep deprivation and the transition to parenthood
  • Core and pelvic stability re-establishment

Postpartum chiropractic care at Breathe focuses on restoring proper pelvic and sacral alignment after the demands of delivery, addressing the postural compensation patterns that develop in the first weeks of caring for a newborn, and supporting the nervous system regulation that affects mood, sleep, and recovery during a time when all three are under significant strain.

Most patients can begin gentle postpartum chiropractic care within a few weeks of delivery — vaginal or cesarean — though we always defer to your OB or midwife's clearance guidance for your specific situation.

Postpartum massage at Breathe is one of the most restorative offerings we have for new mothers. Our licensed massage therapists work with both side-lying positioning and our specialized pregnancy cushion during the early postpartum period — adapting support and pressure to wherever your body is in its recovery. Sessions focus on releasing the specific tension patterns that feeding and carrying create, supporting the nervous system downregulation that helps exhausted new parents sleep more deeply during the limited rest windows they have, and providing the kind of genuine physical care that the postpartum period deserves but rarely receives.

We know that getting out of the house with a newborn is its own accomplishment. Many new mothers bring their babies with them to both chiropractic and massage appointments — fitting their self-care in while baby naps, which new parents quickly learn to do anywhere. Our space is calm, unhurried, and genuinely welcoming to new mothers navigating all of this. If you need to nurse during or between your appointment, please do — we are completely comfortable with that and want you to be too.

Postpartum massage can often begin sooner than chiropractic care — ask our team directly about timing for your specific situation and delivery type.
