Cortisol drives magnesium excretion through the kidneys — meaning the more chronically stressed you are, the more magnesium you're losing. Magnesium deficiency produces muscle tension and cramping, sleep disruption, anxiety, irritability, and headaches — a symptom profile that overlaps almost perfectly with the symptoms most people attribute to stress itself. Zinc is consumed by the immune system in quantities that increase during both infection and chronic stress. Zinc deficiency impairs immune function, affects taste and appetite, contributes to poor wound healing, and affects hormone production including testosterone.
Omega-3 fatty acids are not depleted by stress directly, but they are consumed more rapidly by the inflammatory processes that chronic stress drives. Sustained inflammation from chronic sympathetic activation increases the demand for the anti-inflammatory EPA and DHA that omega-3s provide — and most diets don't supply enough to meet that demand, let alone the elevated demand from chronic inflammation.
